This is a very high quality product but there are things you need to know. First, it is not like working with that rubberized sound deadening material that goes under your carpet. This uses a much thicker aluminum foil over a fiberglass material with a very aggressive adhesive. To give the adhesive its best chance, I started by cleaning my 140k mile floor pan multiple times with mineral spirits, prepped it with scotch bright pads and sand paper, then and gave it a fresh rattle can paint job. I let the paint cure for a week before installing the tunnel shield. It took a 42x48 and 21x48 sheet to do the entire tunnel area from frame rail to frame rail of my ''04 Miata. Once the adhesive makes anything more than the lightest contact, its difficult to remove without separating the fiberglass layer so get it right the first time. I created a template with paper bags and masking tape. then cut the template in such a way that it would lay flat. I then layed out the template pieces on the tunnel shield material to plan my cuts. I bought an inexpensive pair of scissors (ASIN B00LSWLAA8) and they made it through the job... I needed to stop periodically to clean the adhesive and fiberglass off them. The cut edges are sharp so wear some gloves! I roughly contoured the tunnel shield to my project BEFORE removing the paper backing. I then carefully positioned my work and gradually removed the paper backing while rolling it in. Work slowly and deliberately. The foil is flexible enough to roll into and around contours but it does have its limits. The roller I used: (ASIN B07X5SV5FD), its a good quality product that should last through many projects. You''ll need to seal the edges since water could get into the fiberglass layer. DEI recommends their tape for this purpose but several people had negative things to say about the tape. On the recommendation of another enthusiast, I sealed the edges with RTV. I used loctite grey #5699 ASIN B0794BYCZ2. The pressurized container works in any orientation and made it easy to apply a consistent bead. Mask along your seams so you get straight, tidy edges. Again if you work slowly and deliberately, you can get good results. I worked in the silicone with a finger and wore heavy Venom Steel nitrile gloves to keep the chemicals off/out of my body (ASIN B00Y2OFGMW). Good Luck!

In summer, it gets really hot and uncofortable, but with this shield the temps are way down. Easy install, product is very sticky - just make sure to push it against the clean surface really well.

1) Clean the area
2) Test fit with backing still attached.
3) Shape to the area
4) Remove backing
5) Carefully stick one side (or center, depending on where you are installing)
6) Lightly hammer with a rubber mallet to ensure it adheres and that all corners don''t have any air between product and metal.
7) Marvel at the good job you''ve done

Bought this to insulate the trans tunnel in my Mustang. Here''s what worked for me. I completely cleaned the area with Dawn, and dried it. Then, I''d measure out a roughly rectangular area to cover, so I could cut out a piece of the material that was manageable. Then, I''d re-clean the area with Acetone, which dries instantly, and leaves a great bonding surface. I''d put the piece up in place, fitting it into curves and crevices with the handle of a screwdriver or something, then move on to the next piece, overlapping it. (Work from back to front, so the pieces overlap in such a way that air won''t get under an edge and rip it off.- can''t imagine this happening, but hey, precautions, right?) Continue until you have slightly overlapped sheets from back to front. I went ahead and covered all the edges (between pieces, and where pieces stopped) with aluminum tape, which I THOROUGHLY pressed down into the material, until it was almost invisible. The finished product looks and feels heavy-duty.

I purchased this to replace the factory tunnel insulation on my BMW E36 M3. The factory ones are known to just drop as they age, and it made it extremely difficult to reach the bellhousing bolts, so I ripped the factory one off, and installed this one. To cover the whole tunnel, I made three pieces, two half pieces going from the engine to the rear of the car, and one smaller piece to cover the top side, where the top of the bellhousing would go. I made sure to clean the tunnel with mineral spirits, then with a soft and light rubber film and non permanent two way tape stuck all over the tunnel, I was able to take the three templates, then measured and remeasured, making sure I was aware of which side was the adhesive backing, and which side would be exposed to the exterior. After the three pieces were glued, I installed three rivets per side , right on top, just in case the glue gets undone in the future. When drilling the holes for the rivets, just need to be sure there is nothing on the other side, wires or anything important.
Overall I''m really happy with the results, and I feel this is a better solution than the factory insulation my car came with. The only thing left to do, is to apply Hi temp grey RTV to the cut edges, so no moisture will get into the fiberglass .

Good mix of an insulating layer, very heavy duty aluminum facing, and adhesive layer. Not easy to get the clear backing to start coming off to expose the adhesive, but that is typical. It *will* stick firmly to the first thing it touches. That is ultimately a good thing, but requires careful management.

Best bet--figure out how you are going to get it into place before removing any backing. Then I made a gig using duct tape--one piece parallel with the edge to be pulled and two long pieces of tape that has been looped so no sticky side is out. Tape the end of those pieces under the parallel edge piece--then you can use the loop pieces to pull the backing away , even around things like a transmission. You do have to have the edge already started and hold the edge in place until a little more is adhered, but works great. I also recommend having a small piece of trim wood to push on the foil into place for places you can''t reach with your hand (like if you install this with a transmission in place like I did). Also recommend getting some of DEI''s tape for the edges.

As far as the product itself though, initial impressions are very good. I had the engine and transmission out of my miata so I could hopefully do this job the right way. There is a video out there of a gentleman putting one of these in with it installed and I can''t imagine it would hold up as well. Reasons are numerous but I think the most important being there''s no way you could get the tunnel clean enough for proper adhesion. Yes this product is extremely sticky, but like anything adhesive once you clog that surface up with contaminants it''s going to lift off the surface and not provide the kind of bond intended.

If you''ve come here, your car is too hot due to tunnel heat most likely. Though I suppose this product would work for lots of places. The aluminum side of this shield resembles the sort of thing I''ve seen on lots of new oem shields. It''s got a cratered surface, it''s somewhat reflective in nature. It is fairly stiff as a result, though it bends fairly easily.

My application is for a race car (miata) and I''ve always found the tunnel gets just too hot from exhaust especially during the summer months (I usually don''t have carpet either). So hopefully this helps this season. I''ve attached an image that shows how mine went in. I made sure to thoroughly clean the surface before-hand and started with the driver''s side. Working it down and peeling back the adhesive protection layer of the product I was able to get it to finally adhere the way I wanted. Note, I cut my product with tin snips at the folds of the body to help ensure I didn''t have any bubbles in where it applied. I don''t believe there is any real way to not do this at least on a miata''s tunnel. We''ll see how well it works but I''m real hopeful it solves or at least helps to mitigate the heat issue. Hoping cutting it the way I did doesn''t somehow ruin it''s overall effectiveness or make it less long-lived. Will update with how it holds up.

I used this to bolster the stock heat shield on a Jaguar E-type. When I opened the package, the adhesive base hardly clinging to its own backing; there is no way it would last for more than a few minutes just inches away from my 500° headers. I added rivets to be on the safe side, so in hindsight I could have used the non-adhesive version. The foil is quite stout so you need a fresh blade in your utility knife in order to cut it.

The material is a little difficult to cut, I found that an electrician scissors worked the best. I am very pleased with the level of insulation that this provides. The only problem with it is that the self-adhesive is merely okay. It''s very hard to get the transmission tunnel perfectly clean, so it really didn''t stick as well as I''d hoped. Fortunately, I purchased a can of DEI 010490 Hi Temp Spray Adhesive (which is some sticky stuff!). Using that, getting the floor and tunnel shield was a breeze (just work fast).
